Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Active dry yeast Make sure it’s fresh for best results.
  • 1 cup Milk Can use almond or oat milk for a dairy-free option.
  • 2 large Eggs Provide moisture and structure.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Melted butter can be used if preferred.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar For a sweet finish.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon Adjust according to taste preference.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Opt for pure extract for best flavor.

Method

Making the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually add warm milk and melted butter until the mixture forms a soft, elastic dough. Knead for about 10 minutes.
  2. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions. Shape each piece into a ball or your preferred design.
Preparing the Topping
  1. In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, and softened butter until crumbly. Add vanilla extract and food coloring if desired.
  2. Gently flatten each dough ball and spread the topping generously over the surface.
Baking
  1. Place the shaped rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them again and let them rise for an additional 30-40 minutes until puffy.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the pan dulce for 18-20 minutes or until they’re golden brown on top.
